Uno developer likes the 50 MB XBLA cap

Josh Howard of Carbonated Games, the first party Microsoft developer that gave us Uno, likes the 50 MB cap on Live Arcade games. This is revealed in an interview with Next Generation, in response to the recent rumors of a raised size limit.

Howard says that an XBLA game size limit increase has been discussed at Microsoft, but even though Carbonated is a Microsoft first-party, he’s not heard an official confirmation of an official size limit increase.

Howard doesn’t think that a raised limit will change much, a pretty naive approach if you ask me. I’ve had my fair share of dealings with developers and most of them prefer not to cut down on features and graphics due to space limitations.

Howard speculates that if the XBLA limit were increased officially, larger games won’t necessarily permeate the service. “I think you’ll see games that tend to get a little bigger, but I don’t think it’s because anyone is convinced bigger is better anymore.”

The full interview is available here.

Let’s look at this.

  • Today’s size limit is 50 MB.
  • The PSone title Castlevania: Symphony of the Night uses 96 MB in its Live Arcade iteration, this is an exemption with Microsoft’s good will to developer Konami.
  • PlayStation3 downloadable titles get 500 MB, and will offer lots of PSone solutions (that can be moved to PSP, by the way).

I doubt Microsoft will want to be left behind on downloadable games. My guess is that they’ll raise the limit. I wrote a lengthy piece about the recent rumors here.
